MINI JCW Clubman business car road test report

MINI John Cooper Works 1.6i Clubman

MINI John Cooper Works 1.6i Clubman

What is it?

THE fastest and most practical MINI you can buy. New flagship estate gets the same 214PS 1.6-litre turbo engine as the hatchback, sporty suspension and a host of JCW badging. Priced from £23,305.

What’s hot?

  • Storming turbo engine rockets the JCW Clubman down the road…
  • …with 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds and a 149mph top speed
  • Exhaust has a great bark to it
  • Doesn’t cost much to run, though: 40.4mpg and 167g/km of CO2
  • Show it a twisty B-road and the Clubman displays great body control…
  • …fantastic steering and even more stability than the hatch version
  • Tasteful bodykit adds some well-judged aggression
  • Decent kit: sports seats, 17-inch alloys and parking sensors standard
  • Easy to drive, useful extra boot space over the hatch

What’s not?

  • It’s rather pricey…
  • …and that can edge even higher with a few options
  • The usual Clubman faults apply, with that awkward ‘Club’ door…
  • …and a boot that’s barely any bigger than a Fiesta’s
  • There is some torque steer (front wheel squirm) under power
  • And those CO2 emissions put it in the worst capital allowances band

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

The MINI JCW Clubman is fantastic fun to drive, even better than the hatchback version thanks to its extra stability. It’s certainly expensive, and not particularly spacious, but for another £1,000 more than the MINI JCW hatchback, you’re getting a more practical car – and a better performance MINI as well.
