In the middle with you…Stay in the middle lane and face a £100 fine is the message from the government under new legislation due to be introduced

THOSE drivers who stay resolutely in the middle lane on the motorway are to face more than the anger of company car drivers trying to get to their next appointment on time.

Under new government rules to be introduced, police will be able to fine middle lane road hogs £100 – and dish out a three point penalty on their driving licence.

The plans are due to be announced before Parliament today (05 June).

It’s not only the middle lane hoggers that are being targeted by this updated legislation.

Those drivers involved in tailgating – the dangerous practice of running too close to the car in front – are also to be included under the new legislation designed to prevent anti-social driving.

The fine for using a handheld mobile while driving is also expected to rise from £60 to £100; and the fine for driving without correct insurance is likely to double from £100 to £200.
