New, faster but more frugal Golf GTI

This is the all-new VW Golf GTI, the latest version of the original ‘hot hatchback’.

It is faster, more powerful, and yet more economical than its predecessors.

The VW Golf GTI MkVI will be powered by a 210PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI engine – 10PS more than the current MkV GTI.

The new 210PS engine will make the latest Golf GTI the quickest standard production Golf GTI on record.

It will accelerate to 62 mph in 7.2 seconds. And have a top speed of 148 mph.

However, don’t expect to pay for this enhanced performance in reduced fuel economy. The new Golf GTI will do 37.6mpg compared to the Golf GTI MkV’s 36.7mpg.

CO2 emissions are down, too, from 181g/km to 178g/km. This drops it from the 24% company car tax band to the 23% company car tax band (see Company Car Taxation Table).

The new Golf GTI will also feature the distinctive red grille that marked out the original Golf GTI. But unlike the Golf GTI MkI, the latest Golf hot hatch features advanced new technology: an electronic limited slip differential (XDS) linked to an ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) system for maximised traction.

The first pictures of the new Golf GTI show the car in ‘concept’ pre-production trim.

The new VW Golf GTI will go on sale next summer. Prices are still to be announced.
