New Ford Fiesta brings lower running costs

The new Ford Fiesta goes on sale this October.

The new Fiesta will be cheaper to run than the current model, says Ford.

It will also be better to drive and more sophisticated.

An improved line-up of engines and 40kg weight loss will make it more fuel-efficient. The most efficient of all will be a 1.6-litre TDCi turbodiesel tuned for target CO2 emissions of 99g/km. It will be badged Fiesta ECOnetic.

An improved line-up of engines and 40kg weight loss will make it more fuel-efficient.

The most efficient of all will be a 1.6-litre TDCi turbodiesel tuned for target CO2 emissions of 99g/km. It will be badged Fiesta ECOnetic.

There’s also a 1.4 TDCi turbodiesel. Compared with the outgoing model, the new Fiesta 1.4 TDCi saves 45 litres of diesel every 9300 miles through efficiency improvements alone, says Ford.

Every new Fiesta will have what Ford calls ‘low’ insurance premiums and repair costs because of its design.

Features of the new Fiesta include toughened front wings, lights sited higher up to avoid collision damage and sacrificial parts called ‘crash cans’ to help prevent costly repairs.

A 118bhp 1.6-litre Ti-VCT Fiesta Zetec S is aimed at driving enthusiasts. It can sprint from zero to 62mph in 9.9 seconds yet achieves a combined 47.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 139g/km.

The other petrol engines are a 1.25-litre and 1.4-litre, with power outputs ranging from 59bhp and 95bhp. Automatic transmission is available on the 1.4.

The new Ford Fiesta will be available in six trim levels – Studio, Style, Style Plus, Zetec, Zetec S and Titanium.

Many sophisticated features will be available, either as standard or optional items. They include:

    • keyless entry
    • Ford’s EasyFuel capless refuelling – prevents misfuelling
    • automatic projector headlights
    • rain-sensing wipers
    • cruise control
    • 3.5-inch display screen

The new Ford Fiesta offers up to seven airbags, including one to protect the driver’s knees. Its all-new structure is 10% stiffer than before, which will benefit safety.

It will also help the new Fiesta deliver the fine balance of handling control and ride comfort that recent Fords have excelled at.

The stylish cabin uses plush-looking materials and features plenty of storage, including points to charge mobile phones and MP3 players. The boot is a reasonable 295 litres.

The new three-door and five-door Fiestas go on sale in October 2008. Prices and final specifications are still to be announced.
