New VW Golf MkVI: good value prices

THE new VW Golf, the MkVI, is on sale now.

Prices start at £12,875 for the entry three-door model: the Golf 1.4 S.

And rise to £20,537 for the five-door GT 2.0-litre 140PS TDI model with six-speed automatic DSG gearbox.

There are three trims levels: S, SE and GT.

Standard features include ABS anti-lock brakes; ESP electronic anti-skid; seven airbags including new driver Standard features include ABS anti-lock brakes; ESP electronic anti-skid; seven airbags including new driver’s knee airbag; remote central locking; air conditioning; CD/radio; body-coloured bumpers and door handles; and electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors.

The Golf also has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

Chris Craft, director of VW, said: “The new VW Golf is the right product at the right time. It is perfect for people downsizing from larger cars. This is seen now as the sensible thing to do because of the cost of fuel.”

Key to this is some of the big car features available on a family hatchback model. This includes adaptive chassis control, £680; DVD/touch screen navigation and radio system, £1,835; Park Assist (automatic parallel parking system), £494; and parking sensors with rear view camera, £519.

The new VW Golf arrives with the choice of four petrol engines:

  • 1.4-litre 80 PS, 44.1mpg
  • 1.6-litre 102 PS, 39.8mpg
  • 1.4-litre TSI 122 PS, 45.6mpg
  • 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS, 44.8mpg

The TSI units feature small lightweight engines that are both supercharged and turbocharged.

There are also two diesel engines:

  • 2.0-litre TDI 110PS, 57.6mpg
  • 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS, 57.6mpg

For business users, there are two critical models.

The petrol VW Golf SE 1.4 TSI 122PS five-door. It costs £15,962, has CO2 emissions of 144g/km, and a companycar tax band of 16%.

The other is the diesel VW Golf SE 2.0 TDI 140PS five-door. This costs £17,498, has CO2 emissions of 129g/km, which puts it into company car tax band 18%.

Both these Golf models are available in more expensive GT trim, but only with the higher output 160 PS engine for the petrol model at the moment. A 122PS TSI GT model follows in the summer.

Later in the year, Volkswagen will launch a diesel Golf with just 99g/km CO2 emissions, which will lower the Golf’s company car tax band to 13%. While the iconic 210PS GTI model will be launched this summer.
