What is it?

The new Peugeot 308 replaces the outgoing 307 model. Five-door hatchbacks go on sale first; three door versions follow later. There are three petrol engine to choose from:1.4-litre VTi 95bhp; 1.6-litre VTi 120bhp (tested here, which is also seen in the 207 and MINI); and a turbocharged 1.6-litre THP 150bhp. There are also two 1.6-litre HDi diesel units (90bhp and 110bhp) and a 2.0-litre 136bhp.

What’s hot?

  • Size – it’s bigger and wider with more rear room for passengers
  • Interior styling and much improved quality, with soft touch finish
  • Easy driveability, with secure ride and handling
  • Sweet engine gives 42mpg plus economy

What’s not?

  • Additional weight blunts low down engine performance
  • Lack of standard anti-skid electronic stability programme

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

Vastly better finished inside, the 308 is a big step forward from the previous 307. There’s greater interior space, the car rides and handles well, and despite some low-end go, the engine is lively but economical.
