The best bit is that the VW Golf R is jolly fast – but it also does 41mpg. Not bad

VOLKSWAGEN has opened the UK order books for the most powerful Golf ever – the 300PS Volkswagen Golf R.

The new super-Golf is good for a combined fuel consumption of 40.9 mpg and CO2 emissions of 159g/km, remarkable figures for a car capable of blasting to from rest to 62mph in just 4.9 seconds – at least when fitted with Volkswagen’s self-shifting DSG gearbox.

Prices for the Golf R start at £29,900 for a three-door with a six-speed manual gearbox and £31,315 for a similar car with DSG. Five-door cars cost £30,555 (manual) and £31,970 (DSG).

The Golf R’s 2.0-litre 300PS engine is paired with a Haldex all-wheel-drive system that decouples drive to the rear wheels when it isn’t required.

There are extensive modifications to the suspension and steering, including a faster steering rack shared with the Golf GTI and GTD models that requires only 2.1 turns between locks as opposed to the standard 2.75.

The Golf R also gets exterior mods such as a new front bumper and grille, daytime running lights, body-colour sills, matt chrome-capped door mirrors and fancy alloys. Inside, there are sports seats with Alcantara bolsters (leather is optional) and R-specific instrument dials.

The first UK VW Golf R deliveries will take place in March next year.
