What is it?

FORD is adding to its low-emission ECOnetic range with a new engine. It’s a 2.0-litre with 115PS. So although it has a bigger engine there’s less power than the existing 125PS 1.8-litre ECOnetic model. Confused? There’s more. Both engines have the same CO2 figure. But, crucially, the newcomer has marginally better fuel consumption (54.3mpg plays 53.3mpg). And the addition of a sixth gear. Otherwise, the latest Ford Mondeo ECOnetic, available as a five-door hatch and estate, features Ford’s usual eco-tweakery that includes: lowered suspension, low rolling resistance tyres and optimised engine calibration. So what’s the deal with the new version?

What’s hot?

  • Excellent fuel consumption for a large car…
  • …we averaged 42mpg in mainly clogged up city driving
  • Potential 800 mile range
  • Big-hearted third gear provides useful in-gear flexibility
  • But tall sixth gear means it’s a relaxed, comfortable cruiser
  • Easy to use Bluetooth hands-free…
  • …part of excellent premium sat nav system
  • Interior fit and finish quality is good
  • Excellent safety kit includes anti-skid ESP…
  • …and Ford’s Quickclear heated windscreen for frosty mornings
  • Hatchback practicality enhanced by fold down seats
  • Company car tax of 18%…

What’s not?

  • …but the tax rate rises by one band in 09/10 and again in 10/11
  • The Mondeo remains a big car…
  • …so it’s often a squeeze into parking bays

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

So is the new Ford Mondeo ECOnetic 2.0-litre better than the 1.8 ECOnetic? We’d say yes: the driveability is so much better, particularly in third. And motorway cruising is more relaxed, while there’s truly excellent fuel consumption – a combined average of 54.3mpg. It’s just a shame the 18% company car tax banding slips away from the ECOnetic Mondeo in subsequent tax years, rising to 20% by 2011/12. But even at £134 a month company car tax for a 40% payer by then, the Mondeo still provides a lot of car for very little tax.
