Smart driving gives eco advantage

THE winner of the recent TOTAL ECO 10 MPG marathon was a Smart ForTwo Coupe averaging an amazing 96mpg.

ECO-driving can help improve fuel economy – as was recently proved in the 2009 TOTAL ECO 10 MPG Marathon.

The event was won by a Smart Fortwo Coupe CDi Passion that averaged a quite incredible 96mpg. The 2009 winner achieved a 12mpg increase (8%) over the 2008 winner.

The TOTAL ECO 10 MPG Marathon is a 360 mile, two-day challenge around the Midlands that proves skilful eco-driving can increase safety, reduce fuel costs and cut CO2 emissions.

According to sponsors TOTAL, as well as practising clever driving techniques, many of the vehicles were helped through the course by using advanced fuels and fuel economy lubricants, vehicle maintenance and optimum tyre pressure. When combined, the four principles helped drivers save up to 10% in their fuel consumption, said TOTAL.

Gemma Shepherdson from TOTAL commented: “The TOTAL ECO 10 MPG Marathon is such a great way to showcase how clever driving, quality vehicles and advanced fuels and lubricants can work together to make a big impact on fuel economy.”

Overall MPG – Top Five Cars

  • Smart Fortwo Coupe Cdi Passion 96.81mpg
  • Toyota Yaris TR Diesel 86.18mpg
  • Peugeot 207 HDi 90 Sport 84.40mpg
  • Peugeot 207 HDi 90 Sport 84.05mpg
  • Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet Lounge 79.50mpg
