Cracking looks for new Ford Mondeo - due 2013

THIS is the stunning new look of the next Ford Mondeo.

So, business car drivers, get your elbows out and to the front of the queue if you want the new Mondeo as your next company car.

Because with styling cues reminiscent of Aston Martin (a firm Ford once used to own), demand for the next generation Mondeo is sure to be high.

So can I have one – now?

Err, no, not yet. That’s the problem. This tease is the North American version called the Ford Fusion and it’s been launched at the Detroit Motor Show. Business car drivers will have to wait until spring 2013 for this desirable new company car when the Mondeo will be tuned to the UK market.

So why the US? It’s all part of the ‘One Ford’ strategy of building global cars and then adapting them for markets. The Ford Focus was the first of these.

Ok, then, what can we expect from the new Mondeo – apart from those stunning looks?

There’s plenty new on the engine front. Ford is promising us low emission EcoBoost engines – petrol units with high power and low CO2 – plus hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. It all suggests company car drivers will be well provided for with low benefit in kind tax choices.

Ford is as bold to say that the new Mondeo will be a leader in its segment for emissions. No word yet on the diesel engines, but expect a sub-100g/km Mondeo at least.

The new Mondeo will also feature the Driver Assistance pack from the Ford Focus (the £750 option currently buying you Active City Stop, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Aid, Driver Alert, Traffic Sign Recognition, Auto High Beam, Blind Spot Monitoring Systems), as well as voice activated audio communications and entertainment system. Ford calls this SYNC.

Also available on the new Ford Mondeo will be the latest version of MyFord Touch, allowing a driver to interact with vehicle systems through voice control, a touch screen tap or a conventional button. It suggests the new Mondeo will be well-equipped for business use.

Chris Hamilton, Ford’s chief exterior designer for the Fusion/Mondeo model, commented. “Our design goal for the new car was to give the mainstream business car buyer a top-drawer visual experience, adding some emotional appeal to an already sensible choice.”

By the look of the new Mondeo’s styling Ford seemed to have got that bang on target. Roll on spring 2013.
