What is it?

A SUPER efficient A3. New 105PS 1.6-litre TDI diesel model replaces noisy old 1.9-litre engine and brings with it start-stop plus a clever alternator that helps store energy from braking. Tested here in five-door Sportback mode, priced at £18,025. Available in 3dr and Cabriolet form too.

What’s hot?

  • Incredible fuel consumption of 68.9mpg…
  • …and CO2 emissions of just 109g/km
  • Start-stop system is super smooth and so is the engine
  • Strong mid-range urge and decent high speed cruising
  • Accurate steering and surefooted handling
  • Beautifully built cabin
  • Well equipped: even base model gets alloys and air-conditioning
  • Still looks classy

What’s not?
