 Mazda MX-5

The most iconic sports car of recent memory is still an extremely fun car to drive. The steering is pin-sharp, the gearshift is precise and the chassis is as playful or as rewarding as you want it to be.

Best of all, though, is the rock-bottom price-tag – with cars starting from £18,495. If you can live with two seats and don’t mind the iffy cabin quality then you’ll be guaranteed years of fun in an MX-5.

Easily the cheapest of our Top 5 is the Mazda MX-5

Our company car favourite: Mazda MX-5 1.8I SE

  • From: £18,495
  • Company car tax rate: 25%
  • Economy: 39.8mpg
  • 0-62mph: 9.4 seconds

Porsche Boxster

OK, fine, this one isn’t the most sensible company car choice in the world. But, it is the finest handling sports car you can buy, and by quite some margin.

It costs a lot more than everything else on this list but you do get an upmarket cabin and a seriously punchy 2.7-litre six-cylinder engine thrown in. If you can stretch to a Boxster, or even a Cayman, you’ll find yourself asking the question: why would I ever need to buy a 911? It’s really that good.

At the other extreme in terms of price comes the Porsche Boxster. Still, compared with a 911 it’s pretty cheap

Our company car favourite: Porsche Boxster PDK

  • From: £40,549
  • Company car tax rate: 28%
  • Economy: 36.7mpg
  • 0-62mph: 5.7 seconds
