Twin charge Audi A1 provides sporty performance, low mpg

PROVING that the small petrol engine is very much the future for cars, is Audi’s launch of its all-new A1 supermini with a 1.4-litre twin charged engine.

It does everything you might expect from a small engine: there’s 47.9mpg economy and CO2 emissions of just 139g/km, equivalent to a benefit in kind rating of just 16% for company car tax.

But thanks to both a supercharger and turbocharger, there’s 185PS power delivered via a standard seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission. The supercharger provides the initial boost; the turbocharger then continues from 3500rpm to provide additional turbo surge.

The result means the A1 can make the dash to 62mph from a standstill in 6.9 seconds.

The new Audi A1 1.4 TFSI 185PS, which will come with sporting S line trim as standard, makes its world public debut at the Paris Motor Show (October 2).

UK pricing for the new Audi A1 1.4 TFSI 185PS has not been finalised and will be confirmed nearer to the opening date for UK orders, which will be late in 2010.
