ADAM – Vauxhall’s soon-to-be-launched city supermini

Story: RALPH MORTON

So, this is what Vauxhall’s new baby city supermini looks like.

Have a good look at the pictures in our gallery.

It’s called Adam. Or, in Vauxhall capital speak, ADAM.

Perhaps not as alluring a name as a Fiat 500 or MINI, nevertheless this baby Vauxhall is going for your business car pound in the same way.

It’s a design led urban-chic city car that includes a two-tone ‘floating’ roof rather reminiscent of an Audi A1.

Not that it’s likely to be as expensive as the Audi – although we don’t know prices yet, but expect somewhere between £10,000-£11,000.

Vauxhall does seem to have been sharpening its designer pen of late, and the new ADAM benefits from this focus on design – and the ability to transform the car to your tastes: there are over one million different combinations of personalisation available, reckons Vauxhall, including a star-spangly roof lining.

  • 7-inch colour touch screen display, and full Android and iPhone connectivity add the whole urban chic feel

Mark Adams, Vauxhall’s vice president of design, said: “No other car in this segment can be individualised as much as ADAM because we are offering virtually unlimited exterior/interior colour, fabric and kit combination choices. It’s very unlikely that you’ll find two identical ADAMs out there.”

Phew…Don’t get lost in the list!

The designer looks and the name isn’t the only way ADAM is drawing attention to itself.

There’s three trims from launch:

  • JAM (fashionable/colourful);
  • GLAM (elegant/sophisticated); and
  • SLAM (racy/sporty).

With trim levels like that you’d expect plenty of connectivity. And, of course, ADAM has that too.

The baby Vauxhall’s infotainment system supports a variety of media sources, including Bluetooth, as well as connectivity for smartphones with Android or Apple iOS software. The ADAM also features a seven-inch, full-colour touch screen display allowing quick access to the car’s on-board controls.

What about company car tax?

Sorry, can’t help there yet as Vauxhall has not released any CO2 emissions data.

However, there will be the choice of three ecoFLEX four-cylinder petrol engines from launch: a 1.2-litre 70PS, an 87PS 1.4-litre engines and a 1.4-litre with 100PS. All have stop-start tech with a five-speed gearbox, so expect low company car tax and a great range on a tank of fuel.

When can I get one?

Not right now. The new Vauxhall ADAM will get its world debut at the Paris Motor Show in September. It will then go on sale from early 2013.

What else should I consider alongside ADAM?

If you’re in the market for a car like this, business car comparisonsmight include:

  • MINI One
  • Fiat 500
  • Toyota iQ
  • Volkswagen Up!
