What is it?

VOLVO’S sports coupe now gets the low-emission DRIVe treatment. That means optimised transmission and gearing, lowered suspension and improved aerodynamics, along with a smooth underbody to make the car more slippery through the air. The C30 DRIVe is available in two versions: with and without start-stop technology. The car tested here features start-stop, which helps it get under the crucial 100% writing down allowance tax break of 110g/km CO2.

What’s hot?

  • Good to drive. Just pinch yourself this is a Volvo…
  • …a sporting, good-looking Volvo, too
  • Very good start-stop system…
  • …Engine re-engages without becoming irritating or obtrusive
  • Great mid-range power in third
  • Combined mpg is amazing 72.4mpg
  • (We saw 58mpg in mixed driving)
  • Which means 13% company car tax
  • And 99g/km CO2 means full first year writing down allowance
  • Steering quick and accurate

What’s not?

  • Absurd parcel shelf at rear is at best restrictive…
  • It features a narrow opening and is very difficult to take out
  • Trailing seat belt on chair means rear access is awkward
  • The brakes are good…but lack initial bite
  • There’s no clutch rest to left of the pedal
  • Ride really is very hard

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

After years of holier-than-thou Volvos, here’s something to really excite the soul and not break the bank, either. Provided you can live with that firm ride, it’s an attractive, different and tax friendly proposition. Go on, surprise yourself. Try one out.
