What is it?

BUSINESS drivers wanting Volvos appealing sports-styled S60 saloon have been waiting for this car. Available since the beginning of 2011, the S60 DRIVe offers four-door compact executive saloon driving but with very low rates of company car tax. The Volvo S60 tested here is in SE trim with fuel-saving start-stop technology. On the road price £25,595.

What’s hot?

  • Goes about its business in a very deliberate, Volvo manner
  • For instance, the seats are very comfortable…
  • …but hold you in a different way to other seats. You know you’re safe
  • The gearchange is oh-so-long but just the right side of ponderous
  • Useful dashboard prompts are responsible and hard to ignore
  • The world glides past your windows: we’re in Wallander country here
  • Engine has plenty of mid-range torque despite its 1.6 litres…
  • …although you’ll need to change out of sixth on motorways to access it
  • And the brakes work superbly: they are firm and strong
  • Boot has useful pop-up panel with retaining strap for shopping
  • C02 emissions of 114g/km make this an attractive company car…
  • …with benefit in kind company car tax of 13% and 65+mpg
  • And safety equipment includes excellent City Safety as standard…
  • …this avoids low-speed shunts thank to laser and auto brake tech

What’s not?

  • Handbrake is sited to the right of the steering wheel on the dashboard
