Volvo V40 R-Design on test – sporty looker, but the taxman still hates it

The R-Design adds a racy style to the abundantly sensible company car qualities of Volvo’s super-economical V40 D2 1.6 diesel.

The V40 is a strong company car contender and now Volvo has added a little more visual excitement in the form of the R-Design version

What is it?

The Volvo V40 made a strong impression when it was first launched last year.

Among the attractions were subtle, understated good looks, a finely honed chassis and an entry-level diesel that no company car driver could overlook, thanks to its 94g/km emissions and combined 78.5 mpg. So far, so sensible.

Now Volvo has extended the V40 range with two new variants that make it stand out a bit more from the crowd; the V40 Cross Country soft-roader with slightly raised suspension, and, for those who like the standard car but want to make a bit more of a statement, the car featured here, the V40 R-Design.

The sportily-styled R-Design models are developed by Volvo’s Special Vehicles Team in Sweden, and the V40 R-Design is expected to account for about 25 per cent of the 14,000 or so V40s likely to be sold in the UK this year.
