Business Car Manager car review verdict
The Volvo XC60 really is a genuine alternative to its German rivals, presenting a quietly distinctive alternative that’s loaded with equipment and safety gadgets.
But it loses out in terms of costs, especially when compared with the BMW X3. During my time with the car it managed just shy of 35mpg, with most of that time being spent cruising the motorway.
None of this is helped by the D5 spec of the test car, nor its automatic gearbox. Switch to a manual and economy leaps from 44.1mpg to 53.3mpg, with CO2 emissions dropping from 169g/km down to a more reasonable 139g/km.
Even better, drop the all-wheel drive and switch to the front wheel drive model D4 with its 2.0 litre engine and you’ll lose nothing in performance but have a business car manager pleasing 117g/km car that hits nearly 60mpg and drops your company car tax banding from 28% to just 18%.
At that point the Volvo XC60 starts to make a lot more sense. With its wonderfully comfortable interior, spacious passenger area and boot, engaging drive and relaxing motorway manners, it deserves your attention.
