Audi Quattro

The three types of quattro system are individually tailored to the dynamics and performance of each model and so each works slightly differently. Yet all offer superior grip and traction, without compromising on comfort or cabin space.

User-chooser company car drivers who want that extra level of driving pleasure can also specify Sports differential.

This assists performance and driver enjoyment by transferring drive to either of the rear wheels depending on road conditions. When approaching a corner it allows the outside rear wheel to turn quicker than the inside rear wheel, maintaining drive, grip and traction thus sharpening the car’s responsiveness.

Transverse-engined models, such as the A3, Q3 and TT, use a hydraulic multi-plate clutch to achieve up to a 50/50 front/rear drive split.

The difference of quattro to other all-wheel drive systems are highlighted in BMW’s xDrive which, owing to the brand’s rear-wheel drive philosophy, the drive balance is 100% biased toward the rear axle.

At the same time Mercedes-Benz’s 4MATIC system has a centre differential integrated with the transmission casing and a multi-plate clutch, which functions like a limited slip differential, biased towards safety rather than sporting pleasure.
