What is it?

Potentially the best supermini you can buy. Styling cues from the Golf injects some style into the new Polo; lighter and more efficient than its predecessor, too, despite being longer and wider. Engine highlights include all-new 1.2 TSI turbo petrol and three 1.6 TDI common-rail diesels. On sale October, prices should start at £9,000. Tested here in 75PS diesel form.

What’s hot?

  • Styling is sharp yet mature, looks good on the road
  • Cabin very classy with soft-touch dash and quality materials
  • More space inside than before
  • Diesel is super smooth…
  • …quite punchy and returns nearly 70mpg and 109g/km
  • Precise steering, superb ride, hardly any wind noise
  • Residuals will be superb
  • Bluemotion variant due later, promises 87g/km

What’s not?

  • Lacks the overall sparkle of the Fiesta…
  • …with a more mature, less sporty driving experience
  • Likely to be rather pricey

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

There’s no doubt about it – the Polo is a brilliant small car. It’s brimming with quality and feels every inch the mini-Golf thanks to a refined and comfortable driving experience. It won’t put a smile on your face like the Fiesta does, but it gets closer to offering a truly premium feel in a small package. And it’ll be cheap to run too.
