Audi S1 review: pint-size hot hatch

Huge fun to be had here, with all the build quality and premium feel you’d expect from Audi, and for under £25k if you can keep your hands off the extras.

Giant-busting performance from just under £25k, the S1 comes with Audi’s quattro drivetrain and a subtle but striking body kit

What is it?

In simple terms, it is the production version of Audi’s limited build A1 quattro from 2012, aimed at SME directors looking for a smaller, high-performance alternative to the usual executive saloon for a similar £25k + price. 

The price has now dropped to a more affordable £24,900 (£25,600 for the five-door Sportback), but the formula is basically the same, with permanent ‘quattro’ four-wheel drive and independent four-link suspension.

The 228bhp 2.0-litre TFSI engine is a newer version of the same one fitted in the A1 Quattro. So expect 0-62mph in just 5.8 seconds.   

Exterior changes are subtle and limited to a bodykit with quad rear exhausts and unique 17-inch alloys. So fast. But Audi subtle.
