What not?

  • The BMW 650i Coupe is not a cheap car to buy or to run. If you want to run one on the company, then a 40% tax payer will see an annual bill of more than £10,000.
  • If you take full advantage of the glorious soundtrack you’re unlikely to see the claimed 32mpg figure either. Real-world economy will be around the 20mpg mark.
  • For the same money, the Porsche 911 offers similar performance but is far more capable on narrower and twistier roads. The 650i doesn’t manage its bulk quite so well when you’re not cruising down the motorway.

Verdict?

The 650i is an easy car to love simply by the way it effortlessly deals with a whole host of scenarios. You could get out of the Coupe after a 300-mile trip and feel as fresh as you did when you first got in.

However, if you have a sensible head on your shoulders (and the accountant whispering in your ear), the equally capable 640d Coupe in BMW’s product lineup makes a more logical choice.

The torque from the six-cylinder diesel engine makes its acceleration just as addictive and the benefits in economy are clear to see, able to return over 54mpg.
