Is the time right?
You’re still something of a pioneer buying an EV in the UK in 2013, but with a suite of clever apps, a charging partner, and above all BMW’s commitment to come out and fit a charging box to your home or workplace for a one-off £315 (below cost, surely?), the future never looked so tantalisingly close.
Money adds, “I’ve been following all the different manufacturers ever since the first Tesla Roadster was launched in 2008…waiting for the breakthrough.”
What does he mean by ‘breakthrough’?
“I mean not having everyone storming past you on the A27 dual carriageway, which is embarrassing…”
Well, I can assure him that having just driven it, the BMW i3 scores better than well in this regard – but I can’t negotiate his heart on the styling front because a Tesla and an i3 are simply different.
All said and done, my money’s on the i3 – but as you can possibly tell from this blog, I’ve rather fallen for it myself. It’s a very desirable product that marries function with form. In other words, it’s the first true automotive equivalent of the iPhone, and that’s all you need to know.
