BMW X1 sDrive 2.0d SE 5dr road test

What is it?

THE smallest BMW SUV so far. New X1 is attempting to crack the compact off-roader market, competing with top-end versions of the Ford Kuga and VW Tiguan. Available in rear- and four-wheel drive, it costs from £23,325. Tested here in mid-range, two-wheel drive sDrive 2.0d spec, priced at £24,915 on the road.

What’s hot?

  • The allure of that badge on the bonnet
  • Composed handling…
  • …with direct steering and brilliant body control
  • Rapid 177bhp 2.0-litre diesel does 0-60mph in 8.0 secs…
  • …returns 53mpg and emits just 139g/km of CO2 thanks to start-stop
  • Lots of torque equals deep-chested on-move urge
  • Bank vault build quality, strong cabin design
  • Slightly raised ride height should cope with the odd grassy car park
  • Big boot with 420 litres of load space
  • Comfy and adjustable driving position

What’s not?

  • Awkward looks
  • Heavy steering and clutch make town hard work
  • Firm ride doesn’t help matters either
  • Not as much rear seat space as rivals
  • Driver’s seat is raised but not enough to give that proper lofty SUV feel
  • Expensive

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

Think of the X1 as a high-riding 3-Series estate rather than a full SUV and it makes a bit more sense. But it still doesn’t add up. Yes, the BMW X1 is good to drive and its diesel engine is great, but it’s not very comfortable. Or spacious. Or good looking. And it’s also very expensive.
