‘Smart’ Audi headlights should cut night-time accidents

As a result they will know when to automatically switch from dipped to main beam and turn on the cornering light function – achieved by dimming some sections of the light pattern and intensifying.

According to the designers,  at night 96 per cent of the information absorbed by the driver’s brain comes from vision – but 25 per cent of all road accidents in Germany happen at night. “The eyes are the bottleneck,” says Audi lighting expert Jurgen Wilhelmy, who hopes the Matrix LED system will hep seriously slash the accident figures.
