Fiesta SportVan road test Review: Mark Bursa

Ford Fiesta Van SportVan 1.6 TDCi 90PS

What is it?

Top-line version of the all-new Ford Fiesta Van. The SportVan is based on the well-received new Ford Fiesta three-door bodyshell, with more upmarket sporty trim. Our test van is the top-of-the-range model, complete with particulate filter.

What’s hot?

  • Smart looks are a significant upgrade on the previous boxy Fiesta van…
  • …especially with SportVan pack, including rear spoiler and 16in alloys
  • Loadspace only slightly compromised (1cu m v 1.013cu m in old Fiesta)
  • And has rubber liner, four DIN tie-down hooks, half-height bulkhead
  • Full-height mesh bulkhead is optional – and DIN compliant too
  • Driveability improved and there’s new electric power steering
  • Sports-tuned suspension: lowered ride, standard ESP/traction control
  • Engine from old Fiesta van: CO2 emissions a class-leading 110g/km
  • Capless refuelling system is standard, which prevents mis-fuelling
  • Cab is very roomy, and stylish dashboard is straight from the car…
  • …SportVan has added metal-effect finish on dashboard inserts…
  • …plus sports seats; leather steering wheel; air conditioning…
  • …Bluetooth hands free and voice control; and perimeter alarm

What’s not?

  • Payload less than the old Fiesta van: 515kg against 541kg
  • Load length is shorter and narrower than old Fiesta van…
  • …though between-the-wheel arches distance is greater
  • Prices have gone up: new SportVan is almost £1,000 more expensive
  • New Fiesta Van has composites blanking panels at rear…
  • …old Fiesta van had solid metal side panels

Business Van Manager Road Test Rating

It’s becoming expected for van makers to offer a ‘hot hatch’ styled top-line model in the hatchvan sector – and Ford’s SportVan styling looks good on the all-new Fiesta van, based on the sporty-looking three-door Fiesta bodyshell. But using such a sporty body as the basis for a van has been at the expense of practicality, with payload and loadspace reduced from the previous, more boxy Fiesta van. And the new model obviously shows its car roots – there are no rear seats, but there are cupholders in the side panels! But if it’s image you’re after, the Ford Fiesta SportVan’s looks will surely overcome any practicality gripes. It’s also a pleasure to drive, especially with sports suspension and bigger alloys.

Option prices: Illuminated front scuff plates, £130; Full bulkhead, £100; Metallic paint, £250; Rear window protector, £75; Reverse parking sensor, £250; ATC Air Conditioning, £550.
