Ford Ka 1.2 Zetec

What is it?

The eagerly-awaited replacement for an icon. Almost 13 years after the launch of the original, Ford has teamed up with Fiat to produce a new city car. Shrunken Fiesta looks are stretched over Fiat 500 underpinnings. Tweaks are made to the interior and suspension but engines are the 1.2 petrol and 1.3 JTD diesels as the 500.

What’s hot?

  • Cheeky Ka styling (oval rear window and short overhangs) remain…
  • …mixed with the slick look of the new Fiesta
  • Rides better than the 500 on which it’s based
  • Agile around town and capable on the motorway
  • Personalisation options: sporty Grand Prix and Digital models look great
  • Petrol engine is peppy and posts 55.4mpg plus 119g/km of CO2…
  • …so should be very cheap to run

What’s not?

  • The drive. Despite new steering and a stiffer rear anti-roll bar…
  • …it feels like a slightly sharper Fiat 500
  • There’s none of the fun of the original
  • Dashboard is almost identical to a 500 with the same switchgear!
  • Seating position is far too high
  • Tattoo edition looks plain weird
  • Engine sounds coarse at high revs. Gearchange feels loose
  • Pricey at at nearly £10k for the Zetec tested here
