Bigger than a Golf, but smaller than a Touran, the VW Golf SV replaces the Golf Plus

IT’s a new name but a familiar concept.

The Golf Plus is bowing out, to be replaced by the VW Golf SV. The new car follows the same recipe – gently puffing up the standard Golf to give it a higher roofline and a longer wheelbase.

That means quite a bit more space for passengers and their luggage without the bulk of a proper people carrier, a role traditionally carried out in the Golf family by the Touran and the Caddy Maxi Life.

The VW Golf SV has a 40:20:40 split rear seat, and standard seats-up boot capacity at 500 litres is 76 litres greater than in the old Golf Plus. The rear bench can also be moved fore and aft by 180mm – about seven inches – allowing boot capacity to be increased to 590 litres. Seats-down total luggage space is 1520 litres.

The third Golf derivative to be based on Volkswagen’s MQB body architecture after the standard hatch and the estate, the SV shares technical features such as an automatic post-collision braking system with its stablemates.

A wide range of familiar engine options will be available, all featuring Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems.

There are two turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol engines with 85 and 110PS, and two 1.4-litre turbocharged petrols rated at 125 and 150PS. Three turbodiesels are also available – a 2.0-litre with 150PS and two 1.6s with 90 or 110PS.
