Honda Civic Tourer (estate) car review: generous on space, tight on company car tax

We are fans of the new Honda diesel and it’s good news to see it powering the spacious new Civic Tourer.

The interior is a step up, and well equipped too

What’s hot?

  • Very smooth and economical diesel engine providing tax-friendly 99g/km emissions and a combined fuel consumption of 74.3mpg on some trim levels.
  • Extremely roomy and versatile, with a large 624 litre standard boot space that expands to 1668 litres maximum with folded rear seats – a generous figure even by the standards of cars from the class above.

In spite of the svelte exterior, it beats most of the competitors for space
  • Sophisticated adaptive rear suspension option that helps maintain good standards of ride and handling regardless of load – a unique feature in this bracket.
  • Improved interior trim/ambience compared with some other recent Hondas.
  • Fresh, interesting exterior design breaks away from the dull box-like looks of most other small-medium estates without sacrificing practicality.
  • Entry-level S model includes Bluetooth, DAB digital radio, USB connection and 16-inch alloys.
  • SE Plus (£1585 premium) gets rear parking sensors and 17-inch wheels, while SR models (for a further £2600) get the adaptive rear suspension system, heated front seats, sat nav and privacy glass.
  • Range topping EX (at £27,460) adds smart entry and start, and Bi-HID headlamps with washers.

Adaptive rear suspension (on some models) is an excellent addition if you’ll be carrying heavy loads

What’s not

  • Prices a little higher than some main competitors.
  • Fewer engine choices than most rivals.
  • More highly specified models with the 1.6 diesel don’t quite squeeze below the 100g/km barrier so there are no cars that combine the Tourer’s two main headline features – 99g/km emissions and adaptive rear suspension
