Our team of judges picked from a shortlist of models that also included the Volvo V40 and the Vauxhall Ampera, eventually deciding that the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC SE-T was a deserving winner of the crown.
Cars in this category don’t just have to be refined, great value and great to drive but they also have to be cost-effective for company car drivers, and the Civic ticks all of those boxes.
Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC SE-T
- CO2: 94g/km
- Fuel consumption: 78.5mpg
- Acceleration: 10.5 seconds
- Maximum speed: 129mph
- Insurance group: 15
- P11D value: £20,515
- Company car tax band: 14%
- BIK: £2872
- Tax at 20%: £574
- Tax at 40%: £1149
“The Honda Civic wins out on value here. It’s not quite as cheap as the (electric) Ampera on company car tax but it has a far lower P11D value.
“It’s comfortable, refined and comes with a great 3-year, 90,000-mile warranty, too,” said Business Car Manager’s road test editor, Luke Madden.
Key to the Civic’s success was its ultra-efficient 1.6-litre diesel engine, which emits just 94g/km of CO2.
That means good news for small fleet managers because this car qualifies for the 100% writing down allowance that kicks in at 95g/km and below.
What’s more the fuel economy figure of 78.5mpg is seriously impressive, and we found the Civic to be perfect for long, comfortable and refined motorway cruises.
Throw in the massively practical cabin, featuring an absolutely cavernous boot, and some generous standard equipment – including air-con, sat nav and 16-inch alloys – and you can begin to see why we think the Civic is such great value.
Especially when you consider the Civic can be yours for as little as £574 a year in company car tax or just under £230 on a 3-year/30,000 mile business lease deal.
“Low purchase price, whole life costs, BIK costs and good driver appeal ensure the Honda is a worthy winner,” summed up our judges.
