Safety functions

Usage of different forms of feet safety technology will result in reduced risk and often a reduction in fleet insurance premiums. Anything from autonomous emergency braking functions and vehicle diagnostics, to fatigue warning devices is now possible. The integration of cameras for video capture is also a much welcomed development, allowing for proof of driver behaviour and encouraging safe driving techniques. Footage can be used along with telematics data to create a full picture in the event of an accident or to defend an innocent driver’s behaviour.

With safety being paramount and fleet managers and companies overall taking more and more interest in duty of care, you can now even integrate a software program on your fleet driver’s smartphones to lock the keypad once it detects movement of up to 15mph to help protect both driver and public safety.

Fleet management technology

Fleet managers now have access to telematics technology, working with real time data for reporting, scheduling and alerts to driver behaviour issues. The ability to schedule the best route for your drivers not only saves on time management, but will also help reduce overall wear and tear and ultimately fleet maintenance costs as well as efficiencies in customer service. Telematics data can be easily integrated into back office systems to improve workflows and analysis of other departments including customer service, accounts, operations and human resources. But ultimately if used correctly it will have significant impact on the management of your fleet.

GPS uses satellite technology to plan routes and schedule drivers by sending their closet vehicle and providing the fastest route to get there. Cloud storage now means that GPS systems can have an instant install device that is ready to use within seconds, also providing real time information on speeding, hard braking, sudden starts, miles driven and cell phone use available to fleet managers. The advancement of cloud technology now means that users can store information and software on virtual servers and work from it from any location. Such data can then readily be used at any time and from any place for reporting and making informed fleet management decisions.

Fuel cards are another form of fleet management technology whereby data is often under-utilised, the data provided can readily be used to track fuel usage and manage fuel expense. Not only can you utilise cards to benefit from fuel savings, but you can use the data provided to target training focus on fuel consumption and efficient driving methods. Efficient driving encouraged by fuel cards can help to reduce your risk whilst also contributing to a paperless office!

All in all technology is playing a major role in how fleets choose, operate and manage their vehicles and in order to stay ahead of the competition it is becoming increasingly important to keep up with these trends as we consistently seek to reduce costs and improve efficiencies.
