Business drivers can make a difference by adopting a green driver mentality – and save money, says Alphabet’s Mark Sinclair. The rising cost of fuel alone should make businesses think more about greener driving – if only to save money.

But it may also help reduce emissions and cut pollution.

Driving greener can be achieved easily.

For example, planning your journey in advance will save you time and reduce the amount of fuel you use.

Although it’s true that the most modern and technically advanced cars will, of course, help to reduce emissions, you can reduce the amount of fuel you use in any vehicle.

Very often this can be achieved by making even modest changes – such as emptying your boot to ensure you are not carrying unnecessary weight.

Other steps can include:

  • Avoid over-revving the engine
  • Read the road to avoid unnecessary braking and acceleration
  • Ensure your tyres are property inflated
  • Use air conditioning sparingly

Of course, the greenest mile is the one that isn’t driven.

But for businesses throughout the UK this is not always practical. By taking these simple steps business drivers can make a real difference – not just to the environment – but to their wallet, too.
