“Fast chargers have been a massive turning point for electric cars in Britain, knowing you can recharge a car in 20 to 30 minutes, or about the time it takes to have a cup of coffee. You can now travel the length and breadth of Britain if you want to – is a massive boost.

“By Christmas we expect to have provided over 2 million miles of free travel and have installed chargers in every motorway service station in Britain.

“One of the great benefits of electric driving is that we can power our cars from the energy we make in this country, from the wind and sun. Powering our cars in this way will mean we won’t be at the mercy of external events like those currently unfolding in the Middle East and the inexorable rise of fossil fuel prices.”

“When we started three years ago, there was only a couple of cars available and charging took several hours.

“Now just three years later there are 20 different models of pure electric and plug-in hybrid cars on the road and charging times have fallen to 20 minutes.

“Our mission at the Electric Highway is to provide an ever growing national network of fast chargers – for every make and model of electric car on the road in Britain.”
