Toyota S-FR
The Mazda MX-5 has long been the two-seater sports car of choice, but Toyota could soon crash the party with the S-FR. At the moment it’s still a concept but Toyota has hinted that it will make production. The front-engined, rear wheel drive sports car will follow the successful recipe of the GT86 with driver enjoyment prioritised over low running costs.
MINI Convertible
MINI added another model to its revamps range with the convertible at Tokyo. The drop top supermini carries over the same quirky styling and personalisation options as the hatch but adopts a folding fabric roof which can stowed away at the touch of a button. It goes on sale in March priced from £18,475.
Porsche Macan GTS
The best handling SUV on the market has just been made a whole lot better thanks to Porsche giving the Macan the GTS treatment in Tokyo. Larger wheels, bigger brakes and more power, the GTS plugs the gap between the Macan S and Turbo in the range. Power from the 3.0-litre V6 has been upped by 25bhp to 355bhp, which brings with it a price hike up to £55,188
Toyota Kikai
The Tokyo show is famous from wacky one-off concepts, and this year was no different. The Toyota Kikai brings the inside out, and uses all of the car’s mechanical parts as part of the exterior design. It’s purely a design exercise, with visible suspension components, fuel tank and central driving position.
Mitsubishi eX
Mitsubishi previewed its forthcoming all-electric SUV at Tokyo. Called the eX, it will be purely an all-electric model like the Nissan Leaf and won’t be offered as a petrol or diesel variant. It’s set to arrive by the end of the decade alongside an all-new version of the compact ASX crossover.
