Car buying tips
Car buying tips

Time for a new motor? Buying a brand new car is an exciting and exhilarating experience but also fraught with potential pitfalls. Here are ten tips to prevent you making a motoring mistake you’ll regret.

1.    Do your research

You’ll probably have an idea of the type of car you’re after, so read a selection of reviews from different sources and see what experts think. Perhaps more usefully some will suggest alternative similar models that may be a more perfect fit. Take some of the pages along with you if necessary, especially if they provide pricing information.

2.    Petrol or diesel?

Depending on your lifestyle this could be the most important factor to consider, before make or model. The gap in price between the two has narrowed as technology has changed. Petrol prices are falling through the floor and could even dip below 100p-per-litre according to Sky News,

3.    Time of the year

It’s common knowledge that some times of the year are cheaper than others. January is a good time as no-one has any money after Xmas, and you might get a new deal for older models that have been usurped by the new plates. Finding those times when a dealer needs to move stock to fulfil targets is the ultimate aim – try the end of the month, or even better the end of the quarter.

4.    Take a wise head with you

Possible choices include your father or brother, or a friend. You’re looking ideally for someone who will provide a note of caution and stop you purchasing something that’s far too expensive, or inappropriate for your family or leisure needs. Alternatively take a mechanic – it’s unlikely, but he might spot faults or damage.

5.    Remember the other costs

MOT tests and garage costs shouldn’t be a concern for a car rolling off the conveyor belt, but there are other bites at your wallet to consider. A few minutes spent on price comparison sites will show you your likely insurance costs, which could range from a few hundred to a few thousand depending on the model. Your tax also varies considerably depending on your model and its economy– go to www.moneyadviceservice.co.uk for an overview.
