This is the cleanest and most economical Golf ever made – and with none of the performance sacrifices that used to accompany overtly green motoring.

Performance hasn’t been sacrificed for economy – the Golf BlueMotion feels lively and rewarding to drive

What’s hot?

  • Outstanding fuel economy. Urban fuel economy is 74.3 mpg; Extra-urban is 94.2 mpg. Combined is 88.3 mpg.
  • With its 50-litre tank and 88.3 mpg combined consumption, VW estimates a staggering (theoretical) drive range of 970 miles.
  • Assume you do under 10,000 miles a year, most drivers will only have to refuel 10 times a year, VW says.
  • Exceptionally low CO2 rating of 85 g/km –  just 13% company car tax banding.
  • Band A road tax – so you don’t pay any.

It’s pretty well equipped – Bluetooth, digital audio, climate control etc – and the dash is well ordered if rather plain
  • And for SMEs that purchase their company cars, the new VW Golf BlueMotion now qualifies for 100% first year allowances which can help boost cash flow.
  • Dynamically, the Golf BlueMotion is an easy, well resolved car to drive, strong on comfort and refinement: just like many other Golfs.
  • Performance feels livelier than 0-62 mph time of 10.5 secs suggests.
  • Strong torque (250Nm between 1500-3000rpm) means strong low range flexibility.
  • Steering is sharp and well-weighted, making the Golf easy to place and rewarding to drive.
  • Supple, well damped ride and lowered sports suspension also key parts of the BlueMotion’s repertoire.
  • Ambitious 160mph speedo…
  • Equipment includes Bluetooth, Composition Media system with 5.8-inch colour touch screen, DAB digital audio, Stop/Start, ‘Climatic’ semi-automatic air conditioning, multifunction computer, driver and front passenger active head restraints, and more.

What’s not?

  • You can have any transmission you like in the Golf BlueMotion so long as it’s VW’s (sharp, positive) 6-speed manual. No auto available.
  • If you want the 5dr Golf BlueMotion, that will be an extra £655.
  • The Golf dashboard is well ordered yet plain, and the row of blank switches surrounding the gear lever make it seem plainer still…
  • Inevitably, the BlueMotion technology comes at a premium.  The standard 1.6 TDI will still give you 90-105PS and 98-99g/km while costing a hefty 2 grand less.
