Against its competitors the Golf interior has a far more compelling story to tell

What not?

  • Opt for the £1,415 DSG and economy suffers slightly, retuning 58.9 mpg and 125g/km of CO2. As a result you’ll pay fractionally more per month in company car tax bills.
  • With the premium badge comes the premium price. Only £695 more than the GTD hatch, but the estate version is almost £1,000 more than the Ford and a whopping £3,000 more expensive than the Skoda.

Verdict?

For every 12 Golf hatchbacks VW sold in the UK last year, the German brand sold only one estate. The GTD will go some way into narrowing that gap, along with the new Golf R Estate and new Alltrack models.

The Volkswagen Golf GTD Estate offers all of the involvement and performance of the hatch but in a far more versatile package. At £695 more, it also represents outstanding value considering the benefits of the estate version.

Rivals may be cheaper and some even more practical, but the Golf is a more alluring and well-rounded proposition.
