Volkswagen ID Buzz

  • ID Buzz features design cues from the original Type 2 microbus
  • Electrically-powered rather than petrol or diesel
  • Can drive autonomously
  • Not confirmed for production

AFTER the Beetle was brought back from the dead 16 years ago, it was not a case of if but when Volkswagen would reinvent its iconic Type 2 microbus. Well the result is called the ID Buzz and it was showcased at the recent Stateside Detroit show.

With that two-tone paint job, the flat nose and large Volkswagen badge, all the iconic design cues of the original microbus are there.

However after all the diesel controversy, the German company’s focus is now on alternative-fuelled vehicles and as such, the Volkswagen ID Buzz is the latest member of Volkswagen’s ID electric range first revealed at the Paris Motor show with the Golf-sized ID Concept.

The inside of the ID Buzz looks forward rather than matching the retro style of the exterior. It features a flexible lounge-style cabin, with room for eight and if you don’t fancy driving, this VW can do that itself!

When the autonomous mode is engaged, the driver’s seat spins through 180 degrees, allowing you to have a chat with your passengers, with the one-piece steering wheel folding flush into the dashboard.

Sadly, despite Volkswagen planning a range of ID electric vehicles, the ID Buzz isn’t yet confirmed for production. We think there would be plenty of buyers interested – do you? It would be perfect for business meetings on the go!
