Exempt from paying the London Congestion Charge – which is set to go up from £10 per day to £11.50 per day from the middle of June 2014 – the Vauxhall Ampera emits just 27g/km of CO2. Make use of the car’s range-extending petrol generator, and you’ll average a whopping 235.4mpg, too.

“My new uber cool Ampera is not only keeping me green but gets me wherever I want to go – what’s not to love?!”

You’d be forgiven for expecting a car like this to feel sluggish off the mark, but a 0-62mph time of less than nine seconds and a top speed of 100mph means you’ll easily keep up with the traffic in and out of the city.

Simply adding to its convenience, the Ampera can be charged using a standard three-pin plug in just six hours. What’s more, thanks to the car’s eco-friendly nature, it qualifies for the £5,000 government grant for electric vehicles, meaning prices start at just £28,750.
