Honda Jazz Hybrid business car road test report

Honda Jazz 1.3 i-VTEC HX Hybrid CVT

Honda Jazz 1.3 i-VTEC HX Hybrid CVT

What is it?

THE Honda Jazz is the world’s first supermini with a petrol-electric hybrid engine. The 1.3 litre petrol engine’s 88ps power output is boosted by the 14ps electric motor thanks to Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system. As well as the hybrid technology, all new Jazz models benefit from improved ride comfort and reduced noise. Model tested is the Honda Jazz 1.3 Hybrid HX, priced at £17,995.

What’s hot?

  • Lively performance from engine/electric combo
  • And the CVT auto box makes it all a simple two pedal affair
  • The fuel saving auto stop-start is one of the best we’ve tried
  • Eco Assist dashboard helps you get most of the 62.8mpg economy…
  • …Speedo’s ambient lighting changes from green (eco)…
  • …to shades of blue for the more leaden-footed
  • 104g/km CO2 emissions mean 10% company car tax 2011/12…
  • …and 100% first year capital allowances write down
  • Light and airy glass area increases sense of spaciousness
  • There’s plenty of room for rear passengers too and a good boot
  • ‘Magic’ rear seats fold up into back rests to carry tall items
  • Or fold flat to form a capacious load area
  • It all makes the Jazz one of the most practical superminis around
  • Supported by Honda’s legendary reliability

What’s not?

  • We averaged only 49.1mpg in mixed motorway/city driving
  • Susceptible to tyre roar on some surfaces
  • Misses out on London Congestion Charge exemption
  • Frumpy looks and lack of personality
  • Some details – like the parcel shelf hooks – are plain penny-pinching

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

The latest Honda Jazz is better riding and quieter than before, which is all good news for this practical little supermini. The hybrid powertrain also helps make it economical and tax efficient for a company car driver, without the additional IMA system’s battery affecting the car’s practicality. What the Jazz could really do with now is – well, a bit more pizzazz – to really jazz up the Jazz’s appeal.
