What is it?

Renault makes a broad range of cars, from the popular Clio supermini to the accomplished MPV Renault Espace, right up to a Formula 1 racing car. But the firm has never produced an SUV before. So it’s leaned heavily on its automotive partner, Nissan, to fastrack the Koleos to market. It rivals are the likes of Ford’s Kuga and Land Rover’s Freelander. The Koleos is available as a full four-wheel drive 4×4 model, or as a front-wheel drive 4×2 model tested here, with better mpg and lower company car tax.

What’s hot?

  • Cossetting ride with a long spring travel…
  • …Dismisses bumps and dips in a way that only a French car can do
  • Very quiet and refined on the motorway
  • High seating position provides good visibility
  • Engine is usefully torquey low down
  • Plenty of storage boxes hidden under seats and consoles
  • Easy fold rear seats creates flat load bay with one-pull lever
  • Split tailgate makes Koleos a practical estate
  • Three-year/100,000 mile warranty
  • Good spec includes hands-free card key…
  • …This conveniently opens/shuts the car automatically…

What’s not?

  • …But card key is also easy to misplace around home!
  • Those looks – they are just plain unappealing
  • CO2 emissions the wrong side of the new 160g/km tax break

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

The Koleos does so many things so well. It’s a truly comfortable and relaxed long-distance car. Holiday to France? Not a problem in the Koleos. There’s bags of practicality, too, that makes it a fine business/family combination. But the woeful wallflower styling does the Koleos no favours – especially against better SUV contenders such as the Ford Kuga.
