What is it?

Smart-looking estate version of Mercedes C-Class saloon with one of the largest load bays in the compact executive class: 1500 litres. Mercedes reckons it will take four golf bags plus their trolleys. All C-Class estates come with automatic opening rear door controlled from the key fob. Choice of SE, Elegance and Sport trims. This is the latter with special three-slatted grille and C220 CDI diesel engine.

What’s hot?

  • Fabulous refinement and feel-good factor
  • Punchy 170hp diesel engine with strong power delivery
  • Auto box is smooth; progress is effortless and unflustered
  • Speed-sensitive steering precise and direct
  • Firm ride with stiffer Sport suspension
  • Bluetooth phone and sat-nav work easily and logically
  • Electric powered tailgate makes loading/unloading simple
  • Rear seats fold down with one touch to extend load bay
  • High safety quota, including anti-skid avoidance system
  • Classy interior finish includes raise/lower satnav screen

What’s not?

  • Some of the interior plastics could be better
  • CO2 emissions the wrong side of the new 160g/km tax break
  • It’s an expensive compact estate car
  • And, on top of the the £30k the C220 Sport costs, budget for…
  • …Cockpit Management and Navigation Display (COMAND), £1995
  • Plus the five-speed auto box (£1125) and leather (£1295)

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

The strong engine, with its effortless power delivery and imperceptible auto changes, makes the Mercedes C-Class estate such a cultured, sophisticated estate car. And the delightful way such detail as the optional tow bar drops down from below the bumper recess, or the way the satnav display rises from the dashboard, makes owning this car such a pleasure. It’s not cheap by any means. It’s more costly on tax than it should be. But the C-Class estate is a car that will reward with a great feel good factor each time you get behind the wheel. Which has to be worth it.
