SEAT Leon
The faults are minor – and some people might quite like the CD player being in the glove box

Top of a short list is putting the CD player in the glovebox. What a daft idea, especially when there’s a plastic strip that looks made for CDs just where you’d expect to find it. In fact the strip is a motion sensor for the info system; I even tried to poke a CD through until a scornful teenager told me what it really was. Plus it means the passenger gets to choose the music which can be very bad indeed.

The brakes are just the job when you’re pressing on, but they’re ever so sharp and inclined to grab when you’re pottering round town.

And I must say, I miss a 6th gear. Not sure what it would add, but I keep groping for another change.

The sat nav is simple to use, and so is the ‘phone connection, but some of the other stuff buried in the infotainment system remains a mystery – I still don’t know how to dim the dashboard lights for example. Yes I should get the book out and learn, but there’s a stubborn streak in us all.

There, enough negatives already. They don’t really matter against the driving experience and that fact that the Leon is so easy – and cheap –  to live with.

Best of all the teenage boy likes it. They’re a shrewd judge of car ‘X Factor’ and should never be ignored.
