What is it?

At last a Jaguar for company car drivers. The newest model in Jaguar’s XF range, with a 2.2 litre four-cylinder diesel engine and a starting price of just under £30,000.

In 2011 Jaguar added a 190 PS 2.2 litre four-cylinder diesel to the XF line-up. For 2012 a de-tuned 163 PS version of this engine cuts the cost of buying an XF, with an entry-level SE priced at £29,955.

Both power levels of the 2.2D have the same fuel consumption of 52.3 mpg, and the same CO2 emissions of 149 g/km. The newer, lower powered version is offered in SE, SE Business and Luxury specification, with prices up to £32,995. The higher powered 2.2D starts with Luxury spec and is priced from £33,955.

The car tested here is the specification aimed at company car drivers, the SE Business, costing £31,505 on the road.

What’s hot?

•  The 2.2 litre four-cylinder diesel engine combines pace and economy
•  Distinctive XF high-class cabin with a wow factor: on start-up, the gear control rises and the air vents swivel open
•  VED band F, with a tax disc at £130 a year, is pretty reasonable for a car of this calibre
•  Precise and agile  handling, one of the best in its class
•  Very composed and smooth-riding on a motorway long haul
•  Excellent eight-speed auto gearbox is standard
•  Standard kit on all versions from the base model up includes automatic transmission, cruise control, rear parking sensors and part- leather interior
•  SE Business has 17 inch alloys and sat nav with colour touch screen
•  It has seats for five, with generous headroom
•  Boot capacity is a decent size at 540 litres. Split-fold rear seat is available.
