AN eye-watering £197,000 was the top price paid at British Car Auctions in 2012. Seven of the top ten cars sold saw the bidding go over £100,000.

The top price was for a 2004 Porsche Carrera GT that cost £330,000 when new, so perhaps that’s still a bit of a bargain.

Bentleys occupied the next three places on the list, with a 2009 Azure going for £134,000, making it the second-most expensive car sold through BCA last year.

A Rolls Royce Phantom fetched £113,000 – that’s out of reach for most of us but a lot more affordable, if that is the right word, than the £200,000 or more that Phantoms have fetched in the past.

According to Tim Naylor of BCA “The market for high value prestige vehicles remains buoyant despite the difficult economic conditions, with buyers are prepared to invest six-figure sums for the right vehicle.”
