Volvo V60 D4 car review – the Volvo estate with an eye on style

Volvo’s V60 comes in a number different permutations, but this 2.0-litre, five cylinder low emission D4 proves it to be one of the best all-rounders

Volvo V60 D5
Not as square as the full-on V70 estate, the V60 is easy on the eye

What’s hot?

  • Design. The V60 wagon shape might be coming up for three years old yet it’s still high on style and very easy on the eye. Also tough, solid and practical, just as you’d expect from Volvo.
  • Plenty of character and refinement from the smooth, flexible 2.0-litre diesel, backed by that inimitable five cylinder burble.

Well equipped and with superb Volvo comfort – perfect for long hauls
  • Good green figures: CO2 emissions of just 114g/km and strong combined economy of 65.7mpg, putting it on a par with the smaller D2 and D3 diesels.
  • Those emissions means a company car tax rate of 17%, just £97.55 per month for a 20% tax payer. For 40% payer, it’s £195.10.
  • £0 VED for first year, then £30 a year thereafter
  • Exceptional levels of comfort and quietness at speed, so perfect for long distance corporate motorway munchers.
  • Though coupe styling means the load bay not ultimately as capacious as a traditional Volvo wagon, capacity is still a practical 557 litres with rear seats up, rising to 1241 litres with seats folded down
  • True to form, the Volvo’s high quality seats, front and rear, support really well and prove wonderfully relaxing.
  • Long list of standard safety features include Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, Collision Warning, City Safety and Driver Alert to watch for a tired or distracted driver (suggesting you have a coffee break.)

What’s not?

  • Although billed as a sports wagon, this particular V60 is dynamically safe and secure through bends, rather than flat out scintillating
  • Some interior parts, such as the column stalks, could be higher quality
  • Confusing model range, with wide range of engines, trim levels and equipment…and more… to pick your way through
