Four-door saloon and five-door hatchback Vauxhall Insignia models will be in showrooms at the beginning of next year.
Both models premiered on 22 July at the British International Motor Show.
The Vauxhall Vectra replacement is expected to be low on tax, easy on fuel and good on CO2 emissions because it has a class-leading drag coefficient of 0.27.
Official fuel economy and emissions figures for the Insignia have still to be confirmed.
There will be five engines at launch. All meet Euro 5 emission standards and come with six-speed transmissions. That also bodes well for running costs.
Three petrol models range from a 138bhp four-cylinder engine to a 256bhp V6.
Two new 2.0 turbodiesel engines have been developed for the Insignia. They are tuned for 128bhp and 158bhp.
The Insignia will be available with what Vauxhall calls “an innovative FlexRide system”. Adaptive 4×4 also features, along with a front camera that can read road signs and display them on a screen in the car’s instrument panel.
Lane Departure Warning, which alerts the driver who has inadvertently veered out of his or her lane, is also available as an option.
A VXR Insignia, rumoured to have 300bhp and four-wheel drive, is tipped to arrive in late 2009 preceeded by an estate version of the Insgnia.
