Vauxhall Astra road test

Vauxhall Astra 1.7 CDTI SE 5dr

Vauxhall Astra 1.7 CDTI SE 5dr

What is it?

THE most important new Vauxhall ever. Following the excellent Insignia comes a new rival to the Ford Focus. New Astra gets a smart shape, revised chassis (it’s longer and wider), upmarket cabin and new engines. Priced from £15,405 but tested here in £21,407 on the road 125PS 1.7-litre CDTI SE trim.

What’s hot?

  • Looks the part with a sporty Insignia-derived shape
  • Solidly built cabin approaches Audi on quality and design
  • Engine may be getting on a bit…
  • …but decent sound-proofing means it’s quiet…
  • …and quite punchy too with 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds
  • Low running costs thanks to 60.1mpg and 124g/km of CO2
  • And 18% company car tax benefit-in-kind banding
  • Excellent motorway manners
  • Compliant ride and well-weighted steering
  • Agile handling
  • Decent space inside
  • Impressive equipment…iPod plug, air-con, cruise control standard

What’s not?

  • This model is too pricey
  • Could do with more steering feel
  • Doesn’t excel in any one area
  • Handbrake can pinch your fingers
  • Gearlever is mounted too far behind you

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

Well done Vauxhall – the Astra is an excellent family car, one that offers so much more than its uninspiring predecessor. It’s good looking, fun to drive and well made. The new Astra isn’t perfect – the fact that it doesn’t stand out in any one area is a concern with a new Focus due in 2010 – but it’s up there with the Golf at the top of the compact hatchback class.
